A panty-melting sex scene is great fodder for masturbation. It’s even better when the romance characters make good use of a sex toy.
Today author Renée Dahlia recommends romances with sex toys. Now charge up those batteries and get ready to cross off more squares on your #RubOneOutBingo card!

About Renee Dahlia
Renée Dahlia is an unabashed romance reader who loves feisty women and strong, clever men. Her books reflect this, with a side-note of dark humour. Renée has a science degree in physics. When not distracted by the characters fighting for attention in her brain, she works in the horse racing industry doing data analysis and writing magazine articles. When she isn’t reading or writing, Renée wrangles a partner, four children, and volunteers on the local cricket club committee as well as for Romance Writers Australia.

Toys Make Sex in Romances Even Better
Sex is great, but what makes it better? Playing with toys. It’s not just the toys themselves that add spice to a scene. It’s the joyfulness of play, the way characters discuss consent around the use of toys, and how they tease each other. I’m still a baby romance writer with only five books published so far with a range of different heat levels.
My June release, Liability, is a high heat lesbian contemporary romance that has a scene which explores the nuance of consent while using a toy. Neve consents to Jessica using a dildo, but it’s not until afterwards that she sees the dildo and realises that Jessica didn’t tell her the whole story. It’s the black moment in the book, and I hope I’ve managed to balance conflict while still maintaining the bounds of consent.
BB note: Liability releases in June, but you can read Betrayed, the first book in the series, while you wait.
Fire on the Ice by Tamsen Parker
I’ve just finished reading Fire On the Ice by Tamsen Parker, and it’s basically one long sex scene after another. If you want to see character development while people are fucking – this book is fantastic. And they play together with toys… So many toys!
For Real & How to Bang a Billionaire by Alexis Hall
Alexis Hall’s For Real and How to Bang a Billionaire are amazing m/m romances full of toy play, and lush BDSM writing. I can’t wait for the third and final installment in the Bang a Billionaire trio (note they are HFN with a romance across three books and the third one isn’t out yet).
Off Limits by Vanessa North
Off Limits by Vanessa North has a fan your face dildo scene in it. This book is so emotional, plus the roller derby stuff is really fun.
Under the Kilt by Melissa Blue
Sometimes a scene sticks in your head, and in Under the Kilt by Melissa Blue, there is a scene with ice that describes the different sensations of heat and cool in a desperate and thrilling way.
Listen to the Moon by Rose Lerner
For a historical recommendation, Rose Lerner’s A Taste of Honey has a scene that might push people’s ideas around hygiene and cooking. The heroine uses a pestle (from a mortar and pestle) as a butt plug for the hero – and yeah, they are in a commercial kitchen, so pretty much breaking all sorts of modern laws, but blah blah, it’s a historical and well worth the read!
Thank you, Renée, for the sex toy filled romances! (Pun intended)
